The Most Beautiful Connection: Erasmus Bridge

Before construction could commence on the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, a scale model had to be presented to authorities in The Hague. It was this precise model that helped secure the extra financing required for the bridge’s realization. A masterstroke—because once the Swan was completed, it rapidly grew into one of the city’s most recognizable symbols. The slanted pylon embodies the spirit of post-war Rotterdam: a bold urban center with a clear vision for the future and the audacity to dream large. For over 25 years, the Swan has quite literally spanned the divide between the northern and southern districts, uniting the city into one cohesive whole. When people think of Rotterdam, the Erasmus Bridge almost invariably comes to mind. Rewind to the mid-1980s: Bram Peper was mayor of Rotterdam, determined to infuse the Meuse city with a more cosmopolitan energy. With the appointment of Riek Bakker as director of Urban Development, momentum began to build. Bakker’s vision was unequivocal: although the city had turned its back on the river, a significant portion of it lay on the opposite shore. Her directive was clear: build a bridge to the South. And so, the bridge came into being—first symbolically, through social revitalization and urban planning, which fostered an environment ripe for large-scale investment. The Court moved to the South Bank, the Hotel New York was rescued from decay, and Rotterdam made certain that supporting infrastructure—such as a metro station—was put in place. But the physical bridge was, without question, the boldest element of the vision. A literal bridge to the South, it elegantly materialized the aspirations of the nation’s second city.

Too Costly In a 2019 interview with Gers! Magazine, Peper recalled: “This was a municipal bridge, so the city had to find the funds. Our budget was 350 million guilders—exceeding it was unusual at the time. The Municipal Works Department, which also designed the Willemsbrug, proposed a four-pier bridge that fit the budget. Then Riek brought in Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, who envisioned a curved bridge. Absolutely magnificent.” Magnificent, yes—but also more expensive: precisely 45 million guilders over budget. A Symbol of Pride If the bridge accomplished nothing else, it gave Rotterdam’s residents a profound sense of pride. Riek Bakker even asserted that without this bridge, the city would not be what it is today. The initially controversial humming cables were soon embraced across the community. If UNStudio ever tried to claim image rights to the bridge, they would face strong resistance—the bridge belongs to the people of Rotterdam. It stands as the embodiment of the international stature this port city so deeply desired. In one sweeping gesture, the bridge tells the tale of a city reborn from the ashes, reclaiming its pride and becoming whole, with the structure serving as the aorta to its new heart. Compare aerial photos of Rotterdam before and after the Erasmus Bridge was built: new structures emerged rapidly, centered around the Swan. It became the focal point from which the city expanded in all directions.

The skyline continues to evolve, and the urban renewal set in motion by the City Council’s daring river crossing has been embraced and advanced by the city itself. “Renewal became unstoppable,” Peper noted. “Rotterdamers stopped waiting for the city government to act—they started making things happen themselves. That’s how Rotterdam gradually grew into a city to be proud of. Not out of local pride or an underdog complex, but because it truly has something to offer: to youth, to newcomers, and to those who have always called it home.” New landmarks continue to enrich the city, and its appearance transforms year after year: the high-rises on the South Bank, the Markthal, the Depot, the Zalmhaven Tower, and Central Station. Rotterdam and its people will never become complacent—they will always look forward. After all, there’s always room to be more ambitious and awe-inspiring. Yet, that one bridge will forever remain a landmark. Its distinctive slanted profile against the water symbolizes the new Rotterdam—the city of today and the city of tomorrow.
